What is utsavLogic?
“utsavLogic” is precisely what its name suggests, a simple combination of two words: “Utsav,” a Hindi/Sanskrit term for “Festival,” and “Logic,” an English word denoting reasoning based on strict principles of validity.
The concept of Utsav-Logic came to me after marriage, when my husband and I became solely responsible for observing festivals and traditions. Over time, I realized that understanding the reasons behind these traditions deepened my enjoyment and allowed me to appreciate their meaning, rather than simply following instructions.
Now, as a parent of two children, I feel a significant responsibility to shape not only their thinking but also that of future generations. The words of Spider-Man, “With great power comes great responsibility,” resonate with me. As parents, we have the “power” to say ‘No,’ but with it comes the responsibility to explain the ‘why’ behind our actions. I want to empower my children to question and understand our beliefs, so they choose to remember and follow traditions organically, rather than feeling forced. My hope is that when they are in a position of authority, they will continue these traditions out of understanding, not obligation.
Driven by this desire and my own quest for understanding, I’ve embarked on a journey to find the logic behind our practices. India’s rich mosaic of cultures and religions means there are countless traditions I’m unfamiliar with. This endeavor begins with my own family, but I hope to inspire others to reflect on their own traditions and share their values, fostering a sense of global unity encapsulated in the phrase “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam” – The world is one family. This blog is where I intend to explore these ideas.
